Joints are crucial elements of drainage systems
Internal pressure resistance
Couplings are the link between the different parts of the system and ensure that the whole system is watertight. As the robust cast iron components can address any pressure hazard, then the couplings will be submitted to the strain.
In a drainage network, pressure resistance requirements are dependent on:
- The height of the water column between the considered point of the network and the first outlet located upstream. Generally speaking, we differentiate domestic wastewater networks from rainwater networks.
- The risk of accidental loading. The most frequent cases are due to occasional obstruction of downstream pipeline or flooding of the public network.
Quality standards
Couplings are crucial elements of drainage systems. Their quality and careful selection according to their field of use will prevent misalignment or disconnection of the pipework to guarantee both water tightness and mechanical stability. All PAM Building couplings are compliant with the EN877 standard. Choosing a complete and consistent range of cast iron products, which has been performance tested against regulatory requirements, provides you with peace of mind that few other materials can guarantee.
Mechanical assembly
The installation of drainage systems is crucial as it determines whether the performance given by the manufacturer is achieved. Furthermore, the quality of the installation influences the life span of the equipment. PAM coupling systems are easy to install without pre-assembly, welding or gluing. There are no constraints due to ambient temperature or drying time. The announced performances (water-tightness, durability, acoustic comfort...) are reached immediately and at 100%.
Generally, the pressures that occur in wastewater drainage systems cannot exceed the pressure corresponding to the height of one storey, i.e. about 0.3 bar, as sanitary appliances on each floor serve as outlets in case of accidental overloading. The couplings we describe as “standard pressure” are perfectly suitable for this common type of application.
SMU PAM coupling
SMU PAM is inspired by the PAM Rapid coupling design, it is available in small diameters and has the same performance but is a larger version. This larger coupling facilitates installation where cuts are not perfectly square.
PAM Rapid coupling
The single-bolt PAM Rapid coupling allows fast and reliable installation. It ensures optimized water tightness, pressure and corrosion resistance.
PAM R coupling
PAM R, “R” for Repair, this coupling is particularly suited to repairs and retrofits. It is installed in two separate parts.

RESISTANCE TO HIGH PRESSURE WITH PAM HP FLEX & GRIP:
In some rare cases and mostly for rainwater networks, there could be a risk of accidental overloading. The pressure resistance required to ensure these systems remain leaktight and stable depends on the height of the water column liable to occur, and calls for high-pressure couplings able to withstand the resulting pressure (up to 10 bar).
PAM HP FLEX couplings can withstand up to 10 bar hydrostatic pressure. They are the solution for all projects where high pressure loads can occur, mainly in high-rise buildings but also in infrastructure.
RESISTANCE TO END THRUST EFFORTS WITH PAM HP GRIP:
Some specific points on a pipe system may be subjected to thrust loads due to changes of direction and gradient, branches and plugs. To address the thrust forces, PAM HP GRIP coupling can be used.
PAM HP GRIP, are self-anchored with built-in-claw rings to withstand high pressure and address end-thrust efforts. They are a good alternative to standard joints and gripped collars to save installation time and space where room is scarce.

GRIP COLLARS FOR COUPLINGS

PAM GRIP collars are recommended to secure couplings under end thrust forces. They are used with standard couplings such as SMU PAM or PAM RAPID.
End thrust forces can be exerted with changes of direction, gradient and specific components like branches and plugs, for example. In these areas, the forces must be addressed to avoid any risk of the pipe system disconnecting or slipping with the installation of PAM GRIP collars.
