Joints are crucial elements of drainage systems
Internal pressure resistance
Couplings are the link between the different parts of the system and ensure that the whole system is watertight. As the robust cast iron components address any pressure hazard, the couplings are subject to the strain. In addition to pressure concerns, modern drainage solutions demand durable and flexible performance under various conditions.
In a drainage network, pressure resistance requirements are dependent on:
• The height of the water column between the considered point of the network and the first outlet located upstream. Generally speaking, we differentiate domestic wastewater networks from rainwater networks.
• The risk of accidental loading. The most frequent cases are due to occasional obstruction of downstream pipeline or flooding of the public network.
Quality standards
Couplings are crucial elements of drainage systems. Their quality and careful selection according to their field of use prevent misalignment or disconnection of the pipework and guarantee both watertightness and mechanical stability. All Pam Building couplings meet the EN877 standard. Choosing a consistent range of cast iron couplings, rigorously tested for performance, provides assurance unmatched by plastic couplings like pvc or hdpe.
Mechanical assembly
The installation of drainage systems is critical, as it determines whether the manufacturer’s stated performance is achieved. In addition, installation quality impacts the lifespan of the equipment. Pam Building coupling systems support quick and efficient setup, without pre-assembly, welding, or gluing. There are no issues related to ambient temperature or drying time. Full seal performance (watertightness, durability, acoustic comfort) is achieved immediately.
Typically, the pressure in wastewater drainage systems does not exceed the equivalent of one storey in height—around 0.3 bar. In case of overloading, sanitary appliances act as outlets. Our “standard pressure” couplings are ideal for these applications and compatible with a wide range of materials including rubber couplings, ductile iron couplings, and corrugated pipe fittings. Each model maintains tight seal performance even under demanding site conditions.
PAM Rapid coupling
This single-bolt coupling enables a fast, reliable installation. It offers enhanced watertightness and corrosion resistance, delivering efficient pressure performance. The design allows for flexible use in both standard and soil pipe configurations. It’s particularly suitable for applications where flow optimization is key.
PAM R coupling
The PAM R (“R” for Repair) coupling is tailored for repair and retrofit needs. It installs in two parts, making it especially useful for operations where pipes cannot be moved. It can be adapted to a specific nominal size and is compatible with pvc, hdpe, and cast iron couplings, offering a great solution when replacing worn or misaligned parts.

RESISTANCE TO HIGH PRESSURE WITH PAM HP FLEX & GRIP:
In some rare cases and mostly for rainwater networks, there could be a risk of accidental overloading. The pressure resistance required to ensure these systems remain leaktight and stable depends on the height of the water column liable to occur, and calls for high-pressure couplings able to withstand the resulting pressure (up to 10 bar).
PAM HP FLEX couplings can withstand up to 10 bar hydrostatic pressure. They are the solution for all projects where high pressure loads can occur, mainly in high-rise buildings but also in infrastructure.
RESISTANCE TO END THRUST EFFORTS WITH PAM HP GRIP:
PAM HP GRIP couplings manage end-thrust loads due to direction changes, plugs, or branches. These valve-adjacent components integrate claw rings for self-anchoring and increased resistance. They are a heavier alternative to standard fittings and work with sockets and collars to prevent disconnection under pressure.

GRIP COLLARS FOR COUPLINGS

Pam GRIP collars reinforce couplings exposed to end thrust forces and are used with standard models like PAM Rapid. They are crucial in zones with angular changes or length adjustments.
End thrust forces can be exerted with changes of direction, gradient and specific components like branches and plugs, for example. In these areas, the forces must be addressed to avoid any risk of the pipe system disconnecting or slipping with the installation of PAM GRIP collars.
